Training with Colin Richards
The Arts of Mars Historical European Martial Arts Academy has been established by Colin Richards with the aim of researching into the long lost martial heritage of Europe. This research has been inspired by the many years of interest in historical combat in the form of re-enactment, and recently in research into facsimiles of old texts from libraries throughout the world.
The Club motto is “Never get hit by a Sword”. Our curriculum reflects this. The most important aspect of medieval combat was the desire to survive, and so great emphasis was placed on defence. In the renaissance martial arts became under a general title of “Defence of Ones Self”. Everything we do is based on safety first and surviving. When we attack, let us say with longsword we use a safe approach technique, and when we defend we use the same technique. This means you only need to learn one technique for everything you do. Of course this technique is adaptable and morphs its form depending upon what the opponent is doing. We never consider that when we make a strike it is an attack, it is only a threat to ascertain what the opponent will do. We have basically changed to whole concept of fighting upside down and therefore we do not fight we take control
